Jan 3 – First full day in Quito

Up at the crack of dawn – 7:00 – about 4 hrs of sleep. We are raring to go.
Down for breakfast with the gang. Fresh fruit and scrambled eggs with whole milk. Nice. We had a “team” meeting as to what we wanted to do today. First off, away to the police station to report the stolen camera bag. Once they got back we decided to take a walk to a nearby park, only a mile or so away. Along the way there we some kids in the street trying to sell posters. We put out our hands and said stay back, but the first of our group didn’t and one lady was missing her cell phone – Pickpockets. Along the way there was a sign for Ecuador – big letters you could climb on, so of course we climbed on them and took many photos. There was a couple there talking photos of each other, and they offered to take photos of the whole bunch at once. Never do that with a group of photographers, the poor couple hand 9 cameras thrust at them, most SLRs that they didn’t know what to do with them. We then reciprocated at took photos of them.
We all were hungry so we stopped at the mall and had Burger King !! I needed water, a little dehydrated. Onward to the park and the botanical gardens. Nice flowers and I think I got some nice shots. We all were starting to lag, so we turned back toward the hotel and wandered back.
Time for a nap and some Gator Aid to get the electrolytes back up.
We all met up and took off again toward somewhere for supper. We ended up at Mama Chodelinda. Again we climbed stars to the to floor. Very nice cool breeze after we got them to turn off the outdoor heaters. The food was really good and we all ate a lot. I opened a bottle of water which I thought was still, but it was carbonated -got everyone in a 5 foot radius !
The are we were in was full of night clubs and sport bars. Lots of people everywhere and police as well. Around here they drive with the flashing lights on all the time. We picked up a stray dog on the walk back, he seemed to just belong until he found someone sitting on the ground – maybe he had food to share.
We sat in the lounge at the hotel and talked about everything. We discussed what to take and wear in the Amazon when we go on Tuesday. We started to lag, so off to bed. But once in the room, there were things to, to organize and generally move everything so we won’t be able find anything tomorrow.
Also the moon is almost full, so of course we were taking photos of the place in the dark.
