May 7

Slow start this morning, we only have about 150km to our next hotel. We are on the home stretch now.
It’s +4 and clouds this morning. The snow doesn’t stay long, I think the ground is warmer because of all the geothermal activity. I know the roads are. In Alberta the kind of snow we’ve had here would stick and freeze on our roads. Here the roads are dry within an hour.
We are headed abc west over some of the roads we’ve been on before, but this time we are staying near the coast.
And just for Paul – I now have a knife for the last darn tomato!
We went straight to the waterfall that is about 1/2km away. Wandered up and around and it started to rain. O well. There was an old building nearby as well.
Done, we jumped in and the car and headed west.
We took a right off the highway and headed off road through a lava field covered in moss. The track was narrow but not bumpy, kinda neat.
From there we got back on the highway and drove for a bit until we took a left off the highway again, this time toward the ocean. There were a couple other cars, but they stopped at the 4 wheel sign except 1, we followed them. Out and around the big rock toward the ocean, driving through crushed lava. Found a couple of small caves on the water side.
Back on the road and back to the black sand beach. The weather this time was nicer, meaning no rain and less wind. Took a few shots and decided to get a hotdog.
While we were waiting for the hotdog, it started to rain, so we rushed back to the car. We ate in the car.
Back on the road to find our next hotel. We found it, another farm stay – cool. We took off to go to town and get gas. Another 80$ worth. To the bakery to see what’s for desert. Found the WC as well.
To Quiznos for a bite to eat. Then wandered of down a side street only to find a little old lady on the sidewalk trying to get up. We jumped out and helped her to her feet. She didn’t speak English so we really didn’t have a conversation other than waving our hands around to ask if she wanted up. She was probably thinking well duh! Of course I want up. She got her walking sticks oriented and went off down the street. Our good deed for the day.
Right after we got back in the car it started to rain – heavy.
On the way back to the hotel we spotted more horses, this time there was 1 colt as well. I had to stop.
And another stop to take a shot of a waterfall where the wind was blowing so much, the water wasn’t getting to the bottom.
Got to the hotel without any further stops – raining too hard, and checked in.
Quaint small farm. The furniture is all old and wooden. Looks nice.
