Jan 17 off to visit Fernandina

Up at 5:30 and breakfast at 6:00 and on the panga to shore at 6:30. Fast early morning.
We had another wet landing because the dry landing site didn’t have enough water – tide wasn’t in enough.
Wow marine iguanas every where. You had to watch where you stepped. Either an iguana or their poop. Also some seals and their pups. We sat around and watched them play in a tide pool. Then a short journey over lava. This island is the youngest in the Galapagos. Mostly lava and some small cactus growing in it. We made our way up and around to look at an old skeleton of a Minsk whale and then through the mangroves to the pier for a dry take off. The cement is a regiment from WWII.
Back to the boat and everyone is scurrying to put on bathing suits and struggle into the wet suits to go snorkelling.
More turtles and a sea lion and a marine iguana feeding under water. Cool stuff. I got told twice to get back to the group. I was following the seal the first time and a pair of turtles the second.
Back to the boat and get ready for lunch – tough life.
After lunch we had a wet landing on a small beach where Pelicans and Penguins were fishing. During the panga ride to the beach I got knocked in the head by Laurie and her stupid walking sticks. I was just glad it wasn’t the pointy end. The Pelicans would take flight and swoop around until they saw something then dive at up 60mph. The Penguins would try to be there and get some of the action. Then we went for a walk through the mangroves to get out first glimpse of land iguanas and land tortoises. Very very hot and no shade or breeze. Wandered for a hour or so then back to the beach, and into the water I went. We took a group photo, someone from the Beagle took it for us.
Back to the boat to eat a snack and I downloaded and backed up our photos. The lifted anchor and moved to Punta Mangle. Just had an announcement that we have another panga ride in 30 minutes.
Off to the mangroves on the panga. Wow! The light at this time of day ( around 5 PM) is fantastic. Lots of seal pups following us around. Tons of turtles taking their last breath before sinking to the bottom for the night. Then the light hit the mangroves and wow what great shots. Some of the group was kayaking and the seals were playing with them. Fantastic reflections. O so good.
We came back watching the sun set. Fantastic. Back to the boat for supper.
Supper was Tuna steaks. I got beef steak, but I tried some tuna. Tasted like pork, and same consistency.
We had our briefing and Juan showed some of his bird photos. Makes you want to put your camera away. Actually makes you think and slow down when photographing birds.
