Friday

Last night went well. Just before climbing into bed I was in the bathroom and noticed a switch on the wall near the floor. I pushed it thinking it was for the floor heater – nope the ” help I’ve fallen and can’t get up” button. The alarm went off and a flashing red light. I couldn’t get it to stop so I called the desk. He said yes I noticed, just push it again and it will stop – nope. So he came up and pushed another button to stop it – duh, why didn’t he say what button to push? That’s what you get when you are in a handicap room.
After that it was an uneventful night.
Until this morning, I set the alarm for when the bags were to be out – whoops!
Needless to say we got up with 1/2 hr for both of us to get through the bathroom and get our bags out – did it with 5 minutes to spare. I didn’t get a chance to have a long shower under the rain shower head. Just 3 minutes in and out. The shower is most of the bathroom, the water gets everywhere. I liked it, no shower curtain to worry about or climbing into and out of a deep tub.
Breakfast was the usual stuff, nothing extraordinary to write about.
Off toward Kuopia through trees and more trees. We stopped for a pee break where the ski jumping was held for the olympics. There were jumpers practicing so we got to watch for a bit.
Back on the coach and away to Mikkeli where in the 2nd World War Mannerhem met with Hitler. A big deal for Finns. The was a war called The Winter War, where Russia wanted Finland, so they invaded and thought it would be easy and over in a week. The Fins killed a lot of Russians before they decided maybe they should talk peace.
We had lunch in a little place in a mall and then walked up to the big church. Nice inside.
Then back down to the other end if the street to see the railway car where Hitler and Mannerhem met.
On to the coach toward Kuopio. We stopped at a big tower overlooking the city. Trees and lakes and islands as far as we could see. It wasn’t that cold on top.
We got to the hotel around 4:30 and up to the room. They didn’t put the suitcases in the room. They just left them by the elevator. Anyone could have taken them. We went next door for happy hour and chatted about the day.
Supper was included today in the restaurant in the hotel. I sat beside a single kiwi. He was interesting. It sounds like he has been almost everywhere on tours. Supper was slow roasted beef brisket and potatoes. The beef was so tender. The desert was amazing, almost a custard with cloud berries on top.
The sun was shinning afterwards, so we grabbed a map and out the door for a wander. A short wander and back to the hotel.
Today was cloudy with spots of blue sky and sun off and on. Only about 10. A big change for the 26 in Copenhagen and Stockholm.
