May 6
Slept this morning, didn’t wake up until 7 – wow! There’s no snow on the ground, because it’s raining – but it’s +4 to start the day.
Same usual stuff for breakfast.
This morning we go back up the same road we were on yesterday, except farther. I don’t think I’ll have to stop for photos for the first hour, but I might. Hopefully it’s clears a little or at least some dramatic clouds.
2 hr drive with one stop to take photos. The landscape was flat and black for miles. We could see the glacier for about 5 miles. We rounded the corner and poof there was the lagoon with icebergs or chunks of ice.
We checked, got an earlier tour and started to take a walk, but my camera battery died – didn’t like the cold. Back to the car just got in and it started to pour. We have good timing.
After the shower ended it was time to take our boat tour. We wandered over to stand in line and wait for the amphibious duck to come back in. We boarded grab their lifejackets and sat down and waited for everybody to get organized so we could leave. As we were leaving the sun came out so we had a great tour in the sunshine and a little bit a win when we turn back to come back to shore. Lots of icebergs around the edges of the lagoon some that gorgeous blue others white and some striped black and white with lava. We got off the dock and started wandering towards the gift shop but decided we would go to the car instead good thing it started to rain sleet snow hail. We got back to the car in time and waited out the little storm. Then back to the gift shop to get some hot chocolate and check out their T-shirts. Then back to the car again to have our lunch. We had a salad and cookies that we picked up at the supermarket yesterday.
Just as we are about to leave the sunshine came out again so I hopped back out of the car and took a few more pictures of some iceberg. We got in a car pulled out onto the road drove a few places and then turned off on the other side of the road and wondered toward the Atlantic Ocean. We saw a couple of the icebergs come out into the ocean.
Shortly after leaving the iceberg lagoon we pulled off on the side road really bumpy full of potholes. I decided to test out the 4 wheel drive on this Land Rover. We drove for a while to get to where we decided we couldn’t go any farther or there wasn’t anything to see so we stopped and turned around and drove back out to the highway. Of course we took a few pictures along the way.
Back on the road again going back toward hotel. Stopped a couple of times along the way to take photos and at one point we were both tired so we thought we’d stop and have a short little nap. Well we are the bringers of tourists so we weren’t even stop and all of a sudden there’s another car pulled in behind us and then lo and hold three more cars pulled in. Needless to say we didn’t have a quiet time so we didn’t really sleep.
Back out on the road and back toward the hotel with two more stops along the way, one we went off road and went toward a volcano in and around a bunch of big rocks. We stopped and got out and wondered around and took some more pictures and then decided the wind was really cold and here comes the rain again so we jump back in the car and back out on the highway.
Another stop along the way I ripped off the highway down the side road which was gravel and rock or whatever. I needed to take a picture of an old barn with turf on the roof. It was raining and blowing so I didn’t want to get out of the car so I turned around and aimed toward the building and got the picture.
And off again on the highway toward the hotel. I wanted to stop at one more place to get this little building beside a little stream and a waterfall but again it was raining and sleeting and snowing and blowing and I didn’t want to get out so I will try again tomorrow morning to get the shot.
We made it back to the hotel in time for happy hour yay!!!
