We survived the mountains in the winter

Ok, so who’s idea was this ?? To go to the mountains for a photography workshop, in the middle of winter ? O, right, it was mine.

Anyway, we had a great time, even if the winds were 80 Ks on the Columbia Ice Fields.
We got there later in the afternoon last Thursday. There were 2 guys and 1 other woman in the workshop., and of course the instrustor and the owner of the lodge. So 7 of us wandered around in the snow and wind taking photos.

On Friday morning we were up and at breakfast at 06:15, and out the door at 07:00 – to go for the sunrise. We spent about 2.5 hrs standing on Abraham Lake watching the muted colours of the sunrise, and of course taking lots of photos. The wind was strong, as I found out. I took my camera off the tripod, and laid down on the ice. My tripod took off across the ice, all on it’s own.

After that we wandered into the parks and down the Ice Field Parkway. We stopped on the side of the road to take photos, and then scrambled to get away before the snow plows came.
We got to experience a canyon, after a fresh snow fall. The only problem with that was, we had to snowshoe down into the canyon – beautiful place – more photos.

More stopping on the side of the road, for more photos, and then back to the lodge for a sunset session.
The sunset was my usual – grey – not a chance to see the sun, but more ice and snow photos.
Everyone was tuckered out and in bed by around 21:30.

Up and out the door at 07:00 again on Saturday. Again, we were socked in, so no sunrise. But lots of other beautiful views to photograph. On to the Ice Fields to experience 80k winds, and a facial with gravel & snow. Needless to say, we weren’t there very long. Along we went up towards Jasper, stopping along the way to photograph frozen water falls, and the North Saskatchewan River, which was open is spots. On the way back, when we passed the Ice Fields again, it was a white out. Couldn’t see anything. Good thing we were on our way back. We wimped out, didn’t want to wait for another grey sunset, so we got a ride back to the lodge around 16:00. And a nice warm nap.

Again a great meal, and then down stairs to learn stuff, but it was an early night again, becasue everyone was falling asleep.
Up and out the door on Sunday morning at 07:00 for another try at a sunrise, and we were rewarded this time. Blue sky and some clouds, so lots of colour. We were there about 2 hours, and then back to the lodge to do some work with Photoshop.

We left the lodge around 14:00, and wandered in the door at home around 19:00.
Another successful trip, good time, good photos and of course good food (always a plus).

Until next time……. take lots of photos…..
