Another day at Hadrian’s Wall

We took of toward Newcastle and then went left and up to the road running along side Hadrian’s wall. We actually did pretty good, Emily didn’t have to recalculate once (at least until we turned to go back to the cottage). We took some side roads, big enough for the car and a little bit to go down, luckily we only met a big tractor hauling bales, and he drove off the road so we could get by. We stopped at Chester’s Fort and wandered the ruins. There was a tour there, a bunch of old farts! so we went around them when we could. After we saw all there was we headed back to the car, stopping for ice cream along the way, and had lunch. We made sandwiches that we made up this morning, from the fresh buns we got yesterday and ham from the same place. The buns were so good.
Then off towards another stop along the wall. I pulled of the road onto a small side road headed up to t B&B. Beside this road was a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall. I pulled of the road as far as I could, which wasn’t far and then got out and wandered about. There were lots of people walking along the wall today. There was a big groups at Chester’s Fort that were gearing up to head out when we left. As we were driving along you could see groups of people just walking through the fields, I presume on the public foot path along side the wall or where the wall had been. So as I am starting to turn around on this little road and another car pulls up behind us, there is always a car behind us!. I went up the road a little way and turned around. This car has optical sensors in the front and rear bumpers, so all the warning bells were going off even before I attempted to turn around. It was very loud in the car for a minute or two. The car is a four door Golf, not very long, and it barely fit across the road, and according to the sensors it shouldn’t have fit, but it did.
Then off again toward the west. We went down and around and through some little villages that had streets that seemed as wide as the little road I turned around on. It started to rain and looked to be raining most of the way along the wall, so we decided we needed to shop instead. We turned around and went back through the little villages and headed south, looking for a Tesco. We found one not far from the village and wandered in. I am still amazed at all the types of cream there are in Europe and Britain – double cream, single cream, clotted cream, half cream and cream. We bought some double cream and some scones and strawberry jam. I think tea tonight will be scones and cream and jam !

  1. Make sure you go to the Broomhill Farm shop for a breakfast or Sunday carvary. Their full english breakfast is one of our favourite treats. Very easy to drive into as well. They do some good meats and pre-cooked dishes in the butcher shop too 😉

    Loving the travels…….
