Jan 10 – Up and Away, back to Quito

Up early – 3:45 – ouch!!
We crawled out of bed and got everything ready, then to the lodge for breakfast. No one was very perky.
We gathered all our stuff and down to the dock. Now to load in the dark. What fun. And it is raining. It rained almost all night. The first canoe was away and then we loaded up. As our driver was skipping down to he stairs his flip flops slipped and down he went, throwing the two bags that he was carrying. One of them ended up in the river. Good thing it was only laundry.

And we were off, about 30mph in a he dark, no lights. Good thing they know the river. Apparently the other driver was up all night, so he wasn’t at his best. He missed a corner and ended up in the bushes, a couple of times. Our driver was great. We stopped at the beach and let off our guide. He was meeting up with another tour. We left him in the dark by himself, and sped off into the dark.

The river has risen about 4 ft, which is good for them. Not good for the next group of tourists, as they won’t be able to partake in the mud baths. We made it to the bridge where we got on the canoes without an issue. Up the rickety stairs to the bus. Then into Lago Ario to catch the plane.

Small airport, nothing to do. Ron got the tickets organized and then onto the plane. There were two military guys on the runway with machine guns.
Boarded without any problems. Flight was about 45 minutes. The onto a little bus and back to the same hotel. We were the last ones to get a room. It was worth the wait.
We have the tower room with two floors and a balcony. Wow!

Now to rearrange our stuff because we leave tomorrow for the coast. Too bad only one night in this room.
Only 8 of us went out for supper. Paul found a place with pasta and pizza a few blocks away. So if we went. Great food with white linen. We had pizza !!
We slowly made our way back to the hotel and more reorganization. Now to bed, and I get a queen size bed. So much better than trying to remember not to tool too far on a twin bed!

  1. Holy Crap!!! We are exhausted reading all this. Sounds great, but a bit fast paced??
Particularly liked your description of the guy who was stuck in mud up to his knackers!!!
Makes our Europe tour sound a bit boring.
