Jan 20 – Civilization – Santa Cruz Island

We are here for the day. Going to the Darwin Research Station. Turtles in the wild. And shopping!! And hopefully a internet to upload the past 8 or so days of the blog.
Didn’t find any internet and right now I don’t care!
Breakfast at 6:15, on the panga at 7:00 and away we go. Up into the highlands to visit a farm that used to run cattle but now use it for tortoises and tourism. We wander through some beautiful land. Saw some pin tails with a chick (ducks) and tortoises. Wandered around for 3/4 of an hour then back to start and some cold lemongrass tea. I spied coke bottles, so some ice cold coke as well. Back onto the bus and up a bit farther to see some lava tubes. Inside the one was a barn owl. Way smaller than the ones at home. While in the muddy slippery tubes I slide down a roach and landed on my butt. I well there goes the clean pants. Gorgeous scenery, Hugh trees lush vegetation and some wild orchids. Most of the group seemed oblivious to what was around them except the tortoises. Around and up to the house and hot lemongrass tea this time.
Back on the bus and back into town for lunch at La Garrata – owned by our guides mother-in-law. Hamburgers and fries and cold coke. Very good. A little rest.
Then up and away on a walk to the Darwin Research Centre. Only a short walk – ya right. But twice as far once you are inside. Wandered around looking at baby tortoises. Everyone was dragging their butts.
Finally just before 4, Juan finished. We took the panga back to the Samba from the pier at the a research Centre.
Finally, cool air and I can lay down. I am pooped. Had a cool shower, felt better. Up on deck to watch all the activity in the harbour. The rest of the group trickled back. We sat on the back and talked and laughed with two others. That was fun. James got drenched when Jane went up top to hang laundry and wrung out Bob’s shorts on top of him. We are a close knit group now.
Supper was wahoo (fish) I had steak. And strawberries and whipped cream for desert.
I think it will be an early night, every one is pooped. We hoist anchor at midnight and navigate back to Florena tonight.
