Tuesday

This will be a long day, we are going to “chase” the midnight sun tonight.
Down for breakfast overlooking the river. There was a herd of reindeer across the river and no wind so the reflections were great. I hurried ate and then got my camera and wandered out the back. Got a couple of nice reflection shots- the sky reflecting in the river was fantastic.
Onward north we go. We stopped st a Sami Museum at Karasjok, the seat of the Sami parliament. The Sami are the Scandinavian aboriginals. They had wooden houses with sod roofs.
Again we went north with a stop at the first site of the Arctic Ocean. We ran (walked fast) down to the water to get wet. Took a couple of photos and back on the coach. The fjord was not that high.
A stop for lunch and grab a sandwich and pee break. After we left there we made another quick stop to skip stones in the ocean. People had built little Inuikshuks. People also write their names and dates on pieces of slate. All the rock around here is slate. Some of the hardest slate in the world comes from this area.
Back on the coach and off to the northern most fishing village in Europe. We went through about 5 tunnels including the one to Mager Island to Honningsvaag where we are staying for the night. The tunnel to the island is 6870 meters long and 212 meters below sea level – in other words under the ocean to the island.
We are above the tree line now, hardly any trees and if there are any they are only about 4 or 5 feet tall. Lots of reindeer all over.
The hotel room is a bit smaller, but nice. I’ll have to watch out for the wall if I get up in the middle of the night.
Now we are off on our Ultimate Arctic Experience – in other words we are going on a boat to see birds!!
We drove 40 minutes to a small village to board a boat. The boat was smaller than the one on the Galapagos. We saw millions of birds- puffins, gannets, eagles and black and white bird I can’t remember the name of it. Windy and cold but a great adventure – ha ha.
A couple of the group were looking a bit white when they got off the boat, but I was fine, with lots of gravol in my system. Another 40 minutes back to the hotel and happy hour.
We had a free for all for supper. The hotel is full of tourists and each group had their time. We had to share with a French group and everyone was grumpy that they had to
share. The food was good but not really hot.
Then another excursion this time to the North Cape to enjoy the northern most point in Europe. It was 4 degrees and very windy. Needles to say I had to put on a costa date my new toque. We were only outside fora very short time to take photos so we can prove we were silly Canadians. This was like the first time I went to Big Sur to get the sunset – I got grey with a line in the middle where the horizon was. This time you could distinguish the clouds from the Bering Sea.
We raced back inside to get warm and wait to watch a 15 minute movie on life here at the cape. I won’t watch that as it is on 3 screens and even with gravol I’ll probably get sick. I’ll ask for a synopsis from the group.
The clouds and rain continued so we did not see the midnight sun except on the bartenders phone – a photo from 3 days ago.
Slow quiet ride back to the hotel. It’s now Wednesday around 1 am.
