Monday
Nice sleep, and some bird pooped on the window and spoiled the view.
Breakfast was very good, way more selection than the last couple of days.
Blue sky this morning, hopefully it stays that way.
We made our way up the Dovre Mountains, about 900 meters above sea level. Up above the tree line again. Some saw wild musk ox – a dot on the landscape.
We stopped for the morning break at the top. We had a “flourish” – Chad bought us tea and lefsa- a Norwegian delight – a crepe like pancake with butter and sugar and rolled up. The place was built in the 1940’s as a camp for the railway workers a place to live.
At lunch we stopped in Lom, it had a big stave church. We wandered around the outside, not trusting the tour guide’s comment that it wasn’t to be missed. We had lunch to fine and beer and wine to buy. We grabbed a sandwich at the bakery and sat for a bit. Then off to get the grog. Nice little waterfall through town.
We made a couple of photo stops on the way up. On with a fast running river and a small waterfall. That’s where we got the driver to move the coach around the corner to look like we were leaving with one of our group in the WC. No one likes this guy, he is a bully and has to be first for everything and pushes past and says you are all too slow. Anyway we picked him up – drats!
At the top we stopped for a photo opp- ice still on the lake and snow. Now that we were at the top we had to come down. The road was narrow, just wide enough for 2 coaches to pass. Some tourist driving rv’s didn’t know what to do, we saw 2 accidents on the way down.
Switch back all the way. We were sitting in the front seats today, so when we turned a corner the guard rail disappeared and we could see all the way down. Kind if a neat drive. There were people not happy about the road and our driver was loving it. He was laughing.
We survived the trip down, now for our boat ride on the fjord. We had ice cream while we waited. We watched hundreds of people wait for tenders to go back to their cruise ship.
We went about 17km up the fjord which is a “small” finger of a larger one which is 75km to the ocean.
We saw where early settlers made farmsteads on the edge – why anyone would want to live in a place where you are on a 45 degree slant and have to tie up your kids so they don’t fall over, is beyond me. Lots of waterfalls.
Back in and up to the hotel in time to have a 20 minute happy hour before going for supper.
A huge buffet, and lots of people, as the hotel is full tonight.
Back to the room to relax.
