Sept 2
Good morning. We got up at 7 o’clock and got ready and made our way down for breakfast by 7:30. On the coach for 8:40 and away for a tour of the city. We then stopped at the Prado Museum and wandered for an hour and a half looking at Spanish masters. Some paintings were neat others weren’t. El Greco had a dark time with the king And those paintings were very dark and black.
When we were walking into the room with the El Greco paintings there was a tremendous ugly smell that we all walked through. Our tour guide said oh somebody must’ve farted and it wasn’t me. And I’m telling you because I didn’t want you to think it was me.
Back on the coach out on the way out of the city to Sergovia, a world heritage site. There was the Roman aqueduct from where many years ago. We wanted underneath it and stood around and took photos then off down through the small winding streets looking at shops.
The tour guide put it on our own for an hour so we could have lunch and one of the many cafés that surrounded the Square. We wandered looking at a bunch of them they were mostly top of bars with lots of people standing around the order window. We gave up and just sat down at a table and waited for a waiter to come up and ask us what we wanted. We had ham and cheese and mayonnaise sandwiches and Coke. We people watched for an hour and then wandered over and had some gelato before joining the rest of the group for the rest of our tour.
We wandered through more tiny streets over to the castle which was actually run by the Spanish army. Sergio got our tickets and then we went. We wandered around the halls looking at old paintings, old armour and weapons.
When we came out of the car so we wandered through the old Jewish section of the city winding down toward our coach. We were all very thankful when the coach was inside and we all sped up and got on the bus and grabbed cold water from the driver.
The drive back into Madrid was uneventful because I think most people worst having a nap and trying to get over the 5 mile walk in 25 degree heat that we just did.
Once back at the hotel we came up to the room and crashed for a half an hour. And we gathered our strength and decided to go out and find something to eat. We stopped in the bar and talk to a couple on our tour and they gave us the name of a great tapas bar to go to that they’ve been to last night. We wandered out on the street and made our way toward the cafés and bars. We made our way around the corner and stopped and then decided we go back and sit at the one café we are just passed. We got menus and satin talk to the couple of ladies in the next table cause they were on our tour as well. Then the two people we met in the bar in the hotel came up and said why are you here when would you come with us, so we did.
We stopped at a little café called Joe Louis and sat down for a meal, we weren’t very adventurous in our food choice, but it was very good and the company was excellent. We talked and laughed for a couple hours before we all decided that we were tired. We made our way back to the hotel and crashed for the night.
