A gorgeous day for castles

Blue sky greeted us this morning -ya!
We actually got on the road earlier than we have in the past. On the motorway at 8:45 – wow! We headed south toward York, but didn’t go that far. We turned off at Skipton-on-Swale and headed toward Helmsley. We stopped at Helmsley to see the castle. We were in the parking lot, looking around and didn’t see it. Asked a guy going by and he said it is through the trees behind us. We grabbed our cameras and went after the elusive ruin. Needless to say it wasn’t hard to find, rather large, behind a moat (dry). We showed our heritage card and wandered in. Nice bunch of rubble. Part of it build in 1190 or there abouts. We went in every part that we were allowed. Once we saw everything it was time to press onward.
Back in the car and off toward Pickering to see the castle there. We wandered the streets a bit going up and down and around, but didn’t see the castle, so we dediced to press onward. On the road, and then in front of us a farm cafe (Cedar Barn), so we pulled in. Maybe today we will have something to eat at noon. We settled in and then noticed they had scones and jam and cream. So something small for lunch and desert. The scones were warm and had currants. The jam was freshly made and so was the whipped cream – o so delicious. Good thing I had something from the pensioner’s menu.
In the car and away toward Scarborough to see the castle there. Today we were driving across the southern part of the moors. We followed every turn that Emily told us to take and ended up at the castle gate. Right at the gate, had to back down the hill to park. We walked back up the hill and went in, the guy said that the winds had picked up and they might be closing if it gets to 50mph, o and heres a parking tag to put on your dash. So back down the hill I went to the car, and back up to the castle – I had my workout today. We had just got up to the tower when a worker came and said they were closing, the wind was indeed 50mph and stronger – drats! We went through the museum and headed back down to the car.
Now back toward home but going through the moors this time. The moors remind me of the prairies – lots of open space for the wind to blow through, instead of cows there are sheep. We drove down a back road behind this little old guy in a van going about 30mph (the wind was faster). No one else around, that was nice.
On the road and back to the cottage. We got back without going around in circles like we did the other day. We went through a lot of circles, but I followed directions well this time and we got back in less time than it took last time.
We decided to test out the George and Dragon Pub for supper. Good food and big portions, maybe that wasn’t such a good idea after having lunch with scones. O well Good food and good beer. Now back to the cottage to look at photos.

  1. The rain stopped midafternoon yesterday and out came the sun – and it is still around today! It is cooler than it has been – supposed to go to 19 today. First night back scrapbooking this fall – can hardly wait! Enjoy the rest of your holiday!
