Off to Wick with a stranger

The day started off good. Breakfast was great, and we heard our tour guide was fine and leaving to go home on the plane. We picked up a stranger to be our guide for the day. Doogie is a little lost with us. He is used to taking backpackers out into the wilds of Scotland, not riding around on a posh coach with a bunch of old farts that stop every 1 or 2 hours to have tea and buy something.
We got along great. The man knows his Scottish history. We learned about all the battles won and lost.
We first took off along the Loch Ness – didn’t see Nessie, but we made a stop at a castle – Urquhart – now that was a castle. Broken down, not fancy. But being Scotish the guide didn’t want to pay for us to go in, so we hung over the big rock wall, and pushed the brush aside so we could get a photo or two of it.
Then of course we stopped to buy a trinket or two, and have a tea at the clan house. On the coach and off to thr Cullonden Battlefield. It was about the battle of 1746 were the government (British) basically slaughtered all the highlanders. It was a wee bit breezy on the battlefield.
After lunch we departed and made our way north to Wick. Nice drive along the coastline. We stopped in Dornoch. Madonna was married in the church and had her kids baptised there. Nice church, and nice little town.
Onward to Wick, we got in about 5 pm, had enough time to get settle in get our bags and then out and about to take some photos of an abandoned church and outer buildings next door.
Back inside, only about 5 degrees, but sunny, and some wind. Supper in the hotel tonight – was fantastic. Roast pork with potatoes and chocolate cake and ice cream for desert. The guys wanted to lick their plates!
Then back out we went to get some photos of the lights reflecting on the water and hopefully some colour after the sunset – no luck.
No colour in the sunset, but got some light reflections. Watched the kids of the town drive up and down the street, revving their engines and meeting in the only place open, an Indian Take Away place.
Back to the hotel and in for the night.
